About

Nick Walker

Bilingual

I was born in London in 1966, and I grew up in The UK, Belgium and The Netherlands. I have been living in The Netherlands since 1977. With a Dutch mother and a British father I am completely bilingual. Being an English as well as a Dutch native speaker is a huge benefit to my teaching practice. Students of Dutch & Such who are native English speakers or very fluent in English, find my approach to teaching Dutch very helpful. At the early stages of learning Dutch I use English in the lesson to ease you into the Dutch language slowly. For Dutch people learning English it is also helpful to learn from someone who understands all the ins and outs of Dutch.

Learning

I have been teaching English and Dutch since 1995. I also worked as a professional artist between 1995 and 2004, and have exhibited my paintings and drawings at many different locations in Amsterdam. This combination of an artistic as well as a linguistic background gives me a fresh take on teaching languages. My approach is innovative, creative and highly engaging. With a background in art my lessons always appeal to visual learners. My use of videos, maps, photos, pictograms and board drawings help to explain the target language and enhance the learning process. Learning is fun!

Visual

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Art and Education. I also hold a Cambridge CELTA-certificate. In the past I have attended a Harvard University workshop on Visible Thinking, an approach to learning which is at the forefront of education. I have also adopted a method of processing information, known as Mind Mapping, pioneered by the British author and psychologist Tony Buzan. My notes and drawings on the whiteboard reveal a passion for Mind Mapping as well as my classical training as an artist. Language and art come together at Dutch & Such.

However, most people now choose the inburgeringsexamen.

Learn English or Dutch at the Dutch & Such language school

Pull up a chair. Come join us. Language is such endless fun!

All year round I offer English and Dutch language courses. For the Dutch group courses the year is divided into 4 periods.

  • Period 1 – January to April – weekly morning/evening classes
  • Period 2 – April to June –  weekly morning/evening classes
  • Period 3 – June, July and August – Summer School Week
  • Period 4 – September, October, November – weekly morning/evening classes

Private English or Dutch courses at my language school

Private courses are much easier to fit in, so they run all year round. These 1-2-1 lessons can be planned according to mutual schedules. You could start with a series of private lessons any time in the year. Private lessons can only be planned on weekdays during office hours.

In-company courses private and group

In-company courses, both for groups and individuals, can be planned on weekdays during office hours. Again this type of course can be scheduled all year round. The evenings at Dutch & Such are devoted primarily to group courses. I do not teach during the weekends.

Language Certificate

When looking for employment, language skills are often a huge asset. If you have a certificate showing that you have completed a particular Dutch or English language course, it can really help build your CV. Sometimes Dutch organisations such as the IND need to see a Dutch language certificate, for instance if you seek naturalisation or a permanent residency in the Netherlands. At the end of a language course I can offer you a certificate upon request.

Dutch & Such is CRKBO certified, which means my language courses are VAT free.

Method

To get an idea of how I teach check out my 3-minute video on the Dutch word ‘Er’.

Tailored to your needs

My teaching method is a solid balance between theory and practice. The Dutch curriculum is based on a wide variety of sources: language books, articles from the Internet, TV programmes, photographs, maps and more. Carefully composed handouts are a key supplement to mainstream course books. All materials are written specifically to meet the needs of each group of students.

Streaming Video

More recently I have added online video to the curriculum. Homework tasks are set around watching online videos, complete with transcriptions and questions about the video. Click here for a sample of an online video for one of my Dutch lessons: www.uitzendinggemist.nl.

Elearning

More and more, I am also incorporating Elearning into my teaching programme. In my classes you will also learn about the wonderful apps we have at our disposal to help learn vocabulary. Try Quizlet.com. It’s a wonderful app which you can use on iOS as well as Android. Have all the words you need to learn on your laptop, smartphone or tablet and practice your Dutch or English vocabulary on the go.

Mind Map of the tenses in English

Whiteboard drawings

A successful lesson is entertaining and engaging! Formerly I was an artist and over the years I have developed a highly visual approach to my teaching practice. My board work is always full of visual hooks and memory aids to help you understand how the language works. Below is an example of a Mind Map I drew, that looks at  the use of tenses in English. My video gives you an idea of how I use the whiteboard in a Dutch lesson. Find it here.

Testimonials

Kerrie Finch – director – The Finch Factor:

“Nick Walker at Dutch & Such is a diamond. He provides a high quality, effective and extremely personable service as a language teacher. Even if you consider yourself to have little or no language skills, he is the man for you. Each lesson is non-threatening, encouraging, structured and creative. I’ve taken more than one course with Nick, as I progressed through higher levels of understanding. He has great skill in making students feel comfortable and safe – even when you are making mistakes. Perhaps most important of all, lessons at Dutch & Such are fun.”

Lotta and Nils Axing:

Thank you Nick, for making the hard easy, the strange logical… and for making us feel that we do belong here… and for all the fun!

Nils Axing – Managing Director of The InterContinental Amstel Hotel:

“Nick has been a great inspiration for me. He is a creative and very skilled teacher. He uses modern methods in his work. The conversations we have had during our sessions has been inspiring and interesting. While learning the language you also learn a lot about the culture, geography, history, politics and the people. Nick taught me Dutch in a sustainable, fun, talented and interesting way. If you choose to work with Nick I can only congratulate you.”

Elaine Flynn – English teacher – The International School of Amsterdam:

“I had the pleasure of learning from Nick Walker at Dutch and Such this past year. From September through April 2011, Nick provided private lessons for me as I prepared for the NT2 Staatsexamen. I passed the NT2 exam in May 2011. Teachers returning to the classroom can be a very tough audience on other teachers. As a teacher of English myself with over 26 years experience working in high schools, I am impressed by Nick’s abilities as a teacher. He knows his subject, employs a range of methods to get students talking and his professional, positive approach instilled the confidence needed to really start talking. Although my requirements for the course were widely varied, Nick’s dedication to meeting the needs of his learners was always present. Regardless of the range of questions I posed, Nick’s clear, positive and encouraging manner of explaining provided me with the clear understanding of the language and its use that I needed to make progress in acquiring Dutch. I’ve taken many Dutch classes from a wide range of teachers over the years in my attempts to improve my Dutch. While appreciating the enthusiasm of other teachers, Nick’s unique position as a native speaker of both English and Dutch enables him to provide clear explanations using the subtleties and innuendo of English far beyond those offered by the many other teachers with whom I’ve worked in the past. His explanation of idiom, expressions, and actual use of the language could be explained in terms of how a native-English speaker uses language rather than an approximate understanding afforded by non-native speakers of English. It is this combination of his own language skills, enthusiastic instruction and responsiveness to the needs of his students that distinguished the lessons I had at Dutch and Such from other language schools in Amsterdam. I hope you, too, have the good experience of learning Dutch with Nick Walker at Dutch and Such.”

Warren Hammond – Managing Director Benelux – Monsterboard.nl:

“Learning a new language was always going to be tricky for me however Nick quickly structured my sessions around improvement without necessarily mastery; flexibility but with discipline; and enjoyment without losing sight of the objectives. My language skills improved markedly under his tutelage although I am confident that I will never be seen as one of his star students! I would recommend the highly personable and professional Nick to anyone wishing to learn Dutch.”

Isabel Hyams – PA – Off The Fence BV:

“I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how good I think the course has been and how much I enjoy the lessons. I feel that I have learnt a lot and made progress, not just in linguistic terms but also with regard to my understanding of Dutch culture and way of life. I also feel that ‘Nederlands in Actie’ is the first text book I have used, which I will happily revisit to carry on learning the language.”

Melanie Lemahieu – Office manager – Network Hardware:

“Nick is a very friendly, patient and motivated teacher. Lessons are structured with grammatical as well as interactive topics. It is fun and entertaining learning Dutch in a small group. Nick makes Dutch easier!”

Paul Armstrong – Manager – Gouden Gids:

“Thanks Nick for being a great teacher, I really enjoyed the classes I managed to attend and even with the modest amount of homework it has made a huge difference to my ability to understand what people are talking about!!”

Diane Peters – Graphic Designer – Grrr:

“Sorry this note is not in Dutch, but I wanted to say that I really enjoyed the summer school classes I took with you this summer (June 2010). I especially enjoyed the Martin Bril gedichten (poems) and the klein mopje (little joke) about hemel en hel (heaven and hell). I loved the Martin Bril poetry so much, I downloaded all of his poems available on his website and I am reading them all now (it’s 70 pages of poetry!) His poetry is so good that I want to translate it to share with my English speaking friends! He reminds me very much of an American poet named Billy Collins. I also have loved the “question games” that you hand out – we play them at my studio. I know I am very lucky to work at a studio where they are happy to play Dutch games with me! And the brainstorming game is such a great way to learn new vocabulary – I make them play that with me all the time. Thanks again for everything – taking your classes always makes everything much clearer to me and a real pleasure!”

Pia Vaccha – Director at Barclays:

I took lessons from Nick from January to June this year (2013), in order to prepare for the Inburgeringsexamen (which I passed in July).  Nick is a patient and skilled teacher, and his classes are structured and organised. Having previously taken a few lessons elsewhere, I found the fact that he is a native speaker of both English and Dutch to be extremely advantageous in terms of being able to clearly explain the nuances of a complex language.  Perhaps most importantly, Nick’s classes are fun, and his teaching style constantly motivates you to want to learn the language. I’d highly recommend Nick (and already have to several friends) to anyone looking to learn Dutch.
